As of Janu , the USGS maintains a limited number of metadata fields that characterize the Quaternary faults and folds of the United States. The mapped area lies in theo southern end of the Coos Bay coal field. Coal occurs onle in the upper and lower members of the Coaledo Formation. Nearly all the coal mined in the Coos Bay coal field was from the upper member of the Coaledo Formation. In the mapped area, most of this member has been eroded; only a few hundred feed of the basal strata remains.

Coos Bay, OR mines, mine companies, mine owners and mine information. US-Mining provides information on mines, operators, and minerals mined in Coos Bay, OR.   The coal deposits in southwestern Oregon are formed in shoreline swamp environments at the southern end of an Eocene foreland basin near Coos Bay in Coos County (Orr et al., , Figure ).The coal occurs in the upper Eocene Coaledo Formation (Mason, ) and lies in a complex structural basin that is about 24 km wide and 48 km basin trends from north to south .

In coal’s heyday, the Coos Bay area had seventy-four mines, prospects, and undeveloped outcrops. The value of Coos Bay coal exports in was more than $,, and the industry employed several hundred miners. It also gave rise to a number of ephemeral towns, including Beaver Hill and Libby. The Coos Bay basin is located near the Pacific Coast km north of the CaliforniaOregon border. Two thirds of the coal bed methane produced in the United States has come from the San Juan Basin of Colorado and New Mexico. Drilling for coalbed methane (CBM) in the Coos Bay basin will have year round access via existing private.
